Chapter One: The Sorting Ceremony
Hogwarts School of witchcraft and Wizardry
Great Hall
September 1st, 1993
As the first year students made their ways off the boats and in a group assembled and were gathered to be escorted to the entrance hall. All around him, Harry saw wonders and exciting things and for a moment again felt like this was a dream, a world of wonders and he knew that he would do whatever it took to stay. The alternative was a life with the Dursley’s and he knew that if this were a dream, if he was asleep that he hoped God never woke him up.
Harry noticed some paintings in the entrance hall and that they moved and he smiled a moment as the portraits not only moved, but spoke as the group of first years passed them. So far other than the slight embarrassment he still felt on the train, he was happy for the first time in his short life. He was here and the Dursley’s were not. He was away from his Uncle Vernon, who was nothing in his eyes but an abusive unfeeling and caring man. At least he was always that way with Harry. Harry for a moment let himself think about his life at the Dursley’s.
To the Dursley’s he was nothing but a burden, a person to punish and pick on. His cousin Dudley especially seemed to love to torment him and get him into trouble. True, he had always suspected he was odd by their standards and it seemed to him that things weird happened to Harry at times. Harry didn’t mean to be spiteful or do things that were odd. Just these things seemed to happen and even Harry had no idea why they did. He still remembered and it made him chuckle a moment, the way he had found out he was a wizard. He could hear the crash and echo of his memory as Hagrid had burst down the shack they were staying in near the seaside. He could see the large man then lift the door and excuse himself trying to prop it up and then it crashing again to the floor. Harry’s mind then ran through that day as he saw himself opening his letter. The letter that changed everything for this boy.
He could see Hagrid then giving Dudley a pig’s tail and then the memories of Diagon alley, Gringotts and getting his wand filled his mind for a moment. Going to Madame Malkins for new clothes. For a moment this thought and memory unlike the others, seemed to run in slow motion as he remembered the boy, the way he was sighing and looked at bored as he too himself felt. How he had for a moment just felt that here was someone who knew what all of this was about. When Draco asked where Harry’s mother was, he had told the boy that he was an orphan. He remembered seeing Draco frown a moment then as in thought he asked something else, about our kind and theirs. At the time Harry assumed that it meant perhaps Draco was an orphan as well but then a slender and tall blonde woman had come over and made a fuss over the blonde boy.
Harry for a moment wondered what it was like, to have a Mother who made a fuss over you. He wondered if the boy, Draco knew that Harry himself would give anything for his own parents to make a fuss over him. That he now as he stood in the Entrance Hall of Hogwarts realized that Harry for a moment was feeling a little jealous of Malfoy. It wasn’t only the idea of his parents being with him, but he knew who he was. Harry wondered again what would have been if his parents had not been murdered. He knew that he would have perhaps been different himself. Maybe he had misjudged Draco Malfoy a bit because maybe it was normal?
Harry decided if the boy tried again to offer his friendship he would think about it. Perhaps it wouldn’t be as bad as it seemed to him that this Malfoy bloke had things together. Harry’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a woman’s voice and she introduced herself as Professor McGonagall. He listened with somewhat half interest to her and as the doors to the Great Hall opened he for a moment hesitated and seemed to bump back into someone.
Draco was bored as he listened to the old bat talk and realized after a moment, that potter was standing in front of him. He was tempted to speak to him but he saw the stern look on the woman’s face and closed his mouth as she seemed to look over his way in that instant. Draco wondered a moment, how adults knew. He was silent as he then rolled his eyes as it seemed that the dunderheads, Crabbe and Goyle had found him and decided to flank his sides. Draco wrinkled his nose a moment as it seemed that Goyle had forgotten again to bathe himself. Draco would be happy when he was away from the fat idiot. Draco now had brought his attention again at of all things, Harry’s hair and how messy and unruly it was. Though he didn’t say a word.
The doors had opened and Draco stepped forward and right into someone. As he was about to retort that the idiot needed to look where he was going, he saw it was Harry. The words died on his tongue as he saw those green eyes looking at him. He felt something as if he wanted to drown in them. However Draco just shook this feeling off and moved aside Harry and made his way with the rest of the group. Crabbe and Goyle looked at Malfoy with confusion as Goyle had at that moment went and rolled up his sleeves about to knock the smaller boy out of Draco’s way. As they passed they looked Harry up and down and just then for a moment paused.
“Crabbe, Goyle... What is taking you two? Oh I see.”
Draco said as he walked back over to Harry and looked him in the eyes now. The moment before vanished from his thoughts as he just smirked quietly a moment. Even for a moment a sliver of a smile crossed the blonde’s lips. But it was gone as fast if not faster than it appeared and if Harry had blinked he would have no doubt missed it. However, Harry had seen the smile and he took a breath and was about to offer his friendship when Ron came over and to his dismay, his new friend seemed to bring out the bad side to the three other boys as Draco just raised an eyebrow in Ron’s direction.
“Can’t you see that we are having a private discussion? Are you as stupid then as much as your family is poor Weasley?”
Ron’s face turned as red as his hair and in the next minute, it was not just from embarrassment as Ron went to knock Malfoy down and had inadvertently knocked Harry over as well. There was a jumble of legs as it seemed that in that moment Crabbe and Goyle decided to jump in thinking that a fight was on the making and that their leader would need their help. In a matter of three second there were fists flying and Harry felt himself knocked down and someone’s rather large bottom seemed to be on his head. Harry called out in pain a moment as his glasses fell off his face and clattered to the floor.
“You are not even here five minutes and here you are fighting! I’m highly disappointed Harry! Really now!”
As the shrill girl’s voice said this, Harry tried to see who it was and yet he saw nothing but a blur. He felt the weight on his neck and shoulders and head recced off of him. Harry sat up rubbing the back of his neck and groping around for his glasses. Harry felt a hand on his shoulder and then his glasses were pressed into his hand. With a sigh of relief, Harry responded curtly and with relief evident in his voice.
“Thank you, I’m as blind as a bat without these.”
All Harry could make out was the color and shape of something light and as he went to put on the glasses, he saw it had been Malfoy. Malfoy was looking at him with curiosity a moment but then extended his hand to help Harry up. Harry took the hand and he felt a shock go through him. A jolt of something that was there but then it was gone. He stood up brushing off his school robes and then he saw people were staring at him and Malfoy.
“Harry wondered why people were staring at him and Draco. He saw the girl who had yelled at him, was Hermione Granger and that she had her arms crossed and her eyes for a moment went to the boys hands that were still together and she frowned. For a moment Harry hesitated then let go of Draco’s hand slowly and slightly blushed as he made his way to the other people who to his relief had not seen him and the others fighting. As Harry let go of his hand, Draco felt an emptiness inside him a moment. He looked over and saw the girl, he wondered who she was and it seemed to him she knew Harry. He took in her bushy brown hair and the look on her face. It seemed to him, she assumed they were fighting and did not take the time to get the facts on the matter. He wondered if all women were that judgment as he knew his mother and Aunt could be at times as well as other ladies he had an unfortunate to meet over the years. He followed Harry and made his way again to stand beside the boy this time. As they stood together for a moment their hands again brushed and Draco felt his heart beat faster. He had no idea what this feeling was but he knew it wasn’t a terrible feeling. He decided to try something and he for a moment took Harry’s right hand in his left and squeezed it a moment. As he did this, Harry looked over at him and smiled.
“Please step forward when I call your names”
Professor McGonagall said as she then took a roll of parchment and began to call off names. Soon the group was reduced to a few people and there were only about seven people left to place. Harry felt nervous as Ron went to the stool and sat on it and the hat called out Gryffindor. Harry wondered what house he would be sorted into. Ron had told him that everyone who was bad and evil went into Slytherin and in that moment he wondered if he would be placed in Slytherin. He saw Ron make his way to a table with many red heads and wondered if these were his siblings. Harry then turned and looked back at the stool and gray hat as Draco was called to sit.
Draco felt a little nervous as he went to sit and looked directly at Harry. The hat was placed on his head and it took a moment to decide where to place him. At first the hat began to make its decision. As it did its brim opened and a mouth appeared where the seam was.
“Sly... wait a moment. I see potential here for more than one house...”
As the hat had begun to say Slytherin it stopped. As it did it began to see into this boy’s mind and see the future of this young man. It was for a moment undecided where to put him. It had been sure a moment before to put the boy into Slytherin but when Draco had looked over at Harry, things seemed to change. Draco swallowed a moment as he wondered what was taking the hat so long to make its decision. He looked over and saw Marcus Flint with his Slytherin prefects badge gleaming. He saw Crabbe and Goyle and that pug faced girl he didn’t like Pansy. He then looked at Harry and then it seemed to him in that moment, the hat had made its decision as he was in shock as he was not expecting what the hat was to say.
“Gryffindor!”
Draco frowned but stood up and made his way over to Gryffindor. He found a seat in the midst of red and gold students and for a moment he was still in shock. He was put in Gryffindor?
“What is Father going to think about this? Why did it put me in Gryffindor of all houses? Father and mother will be displeased I am sure. Also it seems Marcus is sneering at me. What is going on here?”
As Draco thought this, Hermione Granger was sorted and she came to sit across from him. As she did she extended her hand to him. Draco was still lost in thought and automatically shook her hand and didn’t say a word. Then Harry’s name was called and Draco looked over at the stool and hat and at harry.
Harry was nervous and saw Draco looked a bit in shock as he took a calming breath and sat down on the stool and the hat was placed on his head. The hat began to hum to itself as it searched through Harry’s brain and then it muttered quietly to itself.
“It’s all here my boy, you would be great in any house, and Slytherin would take you far my boy. You have a sharp mind and Ravenclaw would suit you nicely as well. Hmm well what do we have here? I suppose then the right choice for you is GRYFFINDOR!”
Whole hall seemed to erupt into cheers and dazed, Harry made his way to sit next to Draco and looked at people in surprise. Harry found people patting his back and introducing themselves to him. He wondered what the fuss was about. He even then turned to Draco to ask him and he saw the blonde boy seemed to be in his own deep thoughts. Harry just for a moment decided to wait and ask Draco later what was the fuss about as he had no idea. The others hadn’t cheered as much for anyone else. Was this because he supposedly defeated some dark wizard who had killed his parents as Hagrid had tried to explain to him? He wasn’t used to a fuss and knew that hopefully in time it would wane as he wanted nothing more than to be Harry. As it was he knew people were all looking at him now and he felt like a science experiment, like those in his muggle primary school. He brought his attention to the teachers table after a moment as it seemed to him, someone was looking at him.
Severus Snape sat and watched the sorting with interest. As he did this he was surprised with the Malfoy’s boy being placed in Gryffindor. Mentally he wondered how Lucius would accept his only child and heir were made a Gryffindor. He knew the elder Malfoy and knew it might not bode well for his God son. As he finished this thought, he noticed Harry Potter and growled in his throat. He then seemed to watch him as he sat down next to Draco and seemed a bit nervous and unsure about something. He watched them both a moment in curiosity. He drank some of his elf made wine and then saw Harry look up at him. His green eyes for a moment cut through Severus as he just was able to keep his composure.
: So it’s true he has his mother’s eyes. What does all this mean? :
These thoughts filled Severus as he then watched Harry turn to Draco and ask him something. Draco looked over at him a moment and then answered Harry and Harry nodded. Severus wondered if it was possible these two who from what he knew of the Potter boy, were as different as night and day were friends. Severus pondered this as Dumbledore made his speech and then the feast began.
“Umm Draco who is that guy talking to Professor Quirrel?”
Harry asked really quietly as he turned to Draco who had gotten now slowly over his initial shock and he looked at the table a moment then back to Harry.
“Professor Snape, he’s the Potions Master and head of Slytherin house. Also... My Godfather.”
Draco told him as Harry then wondered why the man had been staring at him. He however forgot the question as Dumbledore spoke and then the feast started. Draco smiled as he loaded his food on his plate. Harry just for a moment took in the food and couldn’t decide where to start. This much food he had never seen at once and he started with a chicken leg and a few mashed potatoes and a piece of bread.
