Draco's gray eyes for a moment looked her over and he frowned as it seemed to him she was ignoring him. His chuckle had however brought her notice of him and he looked at her seeing her look at him as if irritated.
“You really are a bookwork aren't you? Already studying when you should be relaxing and enjoying the splendid scenery. “
Draco said, as he saw her look at him a moment in confusion as she turned to look out the window but they hadn't even left the station as of yet and she turned to look back at him raising an eyebrow.
“What are you on about? As for your information it is none of your business what I am doing and also if you are referring to yourself as Splendid, I have to disagree with you.”
As Hermione said these words she let out a sigh and for a moment rubbed her temples as she felt a headache coming on and she suspected it would be huge by the time she arrived at school. His presence had ruined her calm and serene musings and she just closed her book and placed it and the quill into her handbag and pulled a book out of it and decided to ignore him.
“Well then it seems you need your eyes examined perhaps you should have four eyes as well to go with your bookworm personality? Anyways what are you doing here? I figured you would be sitting with Potty and Weaselbee and I would have this car all to myself.”
Draco said this as he did he really was curious as he knew that she usually sat with the Boy who should have died and his sidekick. For a moment he thought she had not heard the question and was about to ask her if she had become deaf as well when she opened her mouth and her words surprised her.
“ You assumed wrongly. I have as much right to be here as you do Draco. How was your summer holiday?”
Hermione said this in a tone that was business like and in a manner that displayed her excellent breeding as she chose to ignore his attitude and told herself that as soon as the formalities were over and done with, she would ignore him for the rest of the trip. Hermione had promised herself she would not let him get to her. Hermione was not in the least bit surprised as she had figured that Draco Malfoy would end up being the Head boy. She knew that he was smart and always it seemed to her a few points shy of her own academics.
When she had gotten her letter this summer and her Head Girl badge, she had been at the Burrow and she had decided right then and there she would try for the sake of their positions as Head students, she would try and get along if she could with Draco. Ron and Harry had wondered who the Head boy would be and when she told them her suspicions, Ron had yelled and told her that she was to turn down the well deserved and much hard worked for position she had earned on her own merits.
That had started an argument and which both she and Ron had begun to fight back and forth. Hermione was astounded at Ron's lack of tact and told him so as well as the fact that she had earned this position and was not about to lose it because of something Draco Malfoy would do. She also told Ron and Harry she intended to try and make peace with Draco and her reasoning for that route of behavior.
Now she was not on speaking terms with Ron as he had just called her a traitor and walked away from her. Harry had kept silent until she had finished speaking and she could see he was trying to understand her motives and after a moment he shook his head. Hermione allowed herself to snap back to the present as she looked at the Head boy now who was looking at her in confusion a moment as well as seeming to try and figure out her angle.
“It was adequate, that's all you need to know Granger.”
Draco replied as he then turned his head to look out at the window and the scenery that was now visible as the train had begun to move and Hermione's eyes turned to study his profile a moment. Draco could feel her eyes on him and it began to irritate him. Hermione just took his answer at face value and decided perhaps he had a boring summer and nothing too exciting happened. She knew that he would not go into elaborate detail with her of course but to say it was adequate..
“Good. “
Hermione replied, as she opened her book and began to scan the contents a moment before setting to a moderate pace with reading. The car was silent as she was reading and he looked over at her a moment in question. Had he given her permission not to just breath the same air as him but also to ignore him? Not that it really bothered him that she was ignoring him, however if he wanted to unnerve her then she had to notice things right? Her simple response to his answer also intrigued him. He knew that other girls would be asking him and hounding him for details. However Hermione Granger it seemed to him, just took his words at face value.
For a moment Draco just raised an eyebrow and sneered in her direction. He wondered what her game was, was she trying to unnerve him somehow? He then wondered why he was even thinking about this as it was just another stupid reason why he didn't like her. It wasn't as he needed much prompt to after all she was a Mud Blood not even good enough to lick his expensive Italian Dragon hide leather boots. The truth was, he had a great summer spending the majority of it with is best mate Blaise and partying with a lot of beautiful Italian girls. He for a moment thought about those nights, the language barrier had been little problem as he communicated just fine with his lips in the manner that mattered most. Not that he didn't speak fluent Italian, just his lips were most useful for non verbal communication.
Draco allowed himself to think and relive the summer in his mind and let an actual genuine smile caress his lips as his face softened a moment. In that moment Hermione had chosen to look up and see it. She was silent as she then looked back down to her journal and she wondered what horrible thing he must have done to be smiling like he was, because she had never known Draco Malfoy to actually smile.
She sighed to herself as she glanced back up quickly under her lashes and saw that whatever had him absorbed in thought left his face unguarded and his lips curved into a smile and then it was gone as he seemed to snap into reality once more.
His thoughts were interrupted however by the sound of a shrill voice and the appearance of Pansy Parkinson.
