Chapter Five Authors Notes
This chapter is very much full of angst and sadness. It is what Jack is feeling as he tries to set aside his grief and do the right thing. He blames himself for not only Ianto's death but also for the reason the 456 have returned to Earth. In 1960's they had come before and he had at the time been instructed by Torchwood and the government to give the 456 thirteen children. They had gotten twelve as a boy named Clement had run away. Now Clement, an elderly man is also affected as much as the children are at this time by the arrival of the 456.
Jack had handed them over as if they were nothing at all and never had a single regret or thought until the 456 had come back. At that time he had his own daughter Alice to protect as well and so helped make the deal to keep his daughter safe. It would come back to haunt him now.
Now they are back and his grandson Stephen is in danger as well as most of Earth's children. He knows that he can't let it go this time. He has to fight and brings it to the 456. As he does he made the mistake of underestimating them and his love, Ianto paid the ultimate price for his arrogance. His lover died in his arms. His heart broken shattered beyond repair.
Jack goes home to the flat he and Ianto shared together. He cries in anguish and pain he blames himself for everything and is inconsolable in the moments he realizes Ianto really isn't coming back and this isn't a nightmare for him. His comfort, life and strength is gone forever. There is no coming back for the Welshman in death and he ,Jack feels that his world is gone. The very happiness he maintained to keep is now sorrow and he likens the flat as a tomb now because the heart and soul of it is gone dead and buried with Ianto.
He makes his heart harden and vows to take on and defeat the 456. He goes it alone as he has fired Gwen. Jack has to do this on his own, has to fight and win. It's his revenge as well as his right to protect the people he loves. Jack knows that he needs to be more focused now and not mourn Ianto as he like for the moment as he is the one who is Earth's protector. He is Torchwood.
He will win for Ianto for all the children on the planet and for Gwen and Rhys' daughter as well as his Grandson to give them a happy future. Jack knows he has to work through the grief to get these things accomplished. He has to be strong and he knows he can't just fall apart.
As much as he would like to tell the universe to screw itself he knows he can't. So he will use his anger against the 456. He will do what he has to, to save the children all over the Earth.
Jack also knows the Doctor won't come. This is his fight and Torchwoods and The Time Lord cannot interfere. Jack has no idea of who is aboard the T.A.R.D.I.S. of course. Hid lover alive and well. Jack is at the pit of his despair and has fallen down as low as a man can go. He knows he has to stand and fight. He knows he has to do it. There is no one else who could do so.
