Chapter Three: Father and Son bonding.
Draco for a moment was silent as the words penetrated his mind. He didn’t want his son to seem as he was stupid as he had no idea what this Mall place was so he replied.
“Sure, we can go there if you like Max. So let us go and get a good wine from the wine cellar and we can be off.”
Max nodded and followed his father to the cellar and watched as Draco took a few moments to peruse the wines and finally after a bit he selected one bottle that was covered in dust. Max saw the label and looked at his father.
“It’s well aged I hope it is not too potent. Mum will like it I am sure. Come on let’s go to the Mall I need to pick up a thing or two and then we can go to my house.”
Max said this as he turned to leave when he saw Draco was just looking at him a moment with a faraway expression in his grey eyes.
“Are you alright you’re not having a heart attack are you?”
Max asked as he for a moment was concerned as Draco got paler if it were possible and he replied simply.
“I assure you my heart works quite well. I just was thinking back to that night and how we parted it haunted me for so long and now I’m going to see those beautiful brown eyes again. To be blunt and honest I am scared shitless right now.”
As Draco admitted this he for a moment afterwards took a calming breath and relaxed and looked a bit sheepish.
“I may be scared but I want to see her, I need to see her. Not just because of you but because I have to know what it was that made her go away. Why she left England and didn’t stay or contact me or answer any of my owls to her. Why she chose to raise you alone.”
As Draco admitted this however for a moment was thinking and continued on with his thoughts aloud.
“Why alone, I mean she’s beautiful and brilliant and could have any man she desired. Any man, be he a wizard or not. Why go it alone?”
As he said this Max wondered too for a moment about that and he knew he had a theory as to why but for the moment kept silent. Partly because he had no idea if he was right and also he didn’t think it would be right to give his Father encouragement until he knew he was correct.
Though his theory was simply because she loved him still and he knew he was not a person who went into matchmaking and such but he knew that if they both really and truly did love each other as he guessed, then it was about time someone had stepped in and straightened it out.
Though he never thought it would be him of all people to do so for his parents. He knew that there were other people who could have done so and wondered why they hadn’t. Why hadn’t his Godfathers or his Uncle done so? Was it because she had asked them not to, did they not know how his Mother used to cry herself to sleep at night when he was still young? Did they not know that despite time and distance she still loved his Father?
Max now had a new question on his kind as well. Why hide? He realized his mother was hiding or at least made a good job of making herself not visible. Throwing herself into her teaching and not taking holidays. Also when they had come to England she had been a bit quiet and not even told his Godfathers and God Mother she had come back.
Why was it? Was it because she was afraid of the man who was now looking at him with a little bit of concern and surprise or was it something else?
Max didn’t know and a part of him was sure it was his Father but there had to be more to that then just Draco Malfoy. He loved his Mother deeply and respected her above anyone else but what was it? He knew that it had to be something big because his Mother was a strong woman who took no crap from anyone, especially him and her brother. But how is it possible such a strong woman who showed no fear and even at times was a bit too daring in his opinion, afraid of the man who was his Father?
He wondered what it was because as far as he could see the old guy really was being honest when he spoke to him. He could see through a liar with the best of them. So why?
“Why?”
Max said aloud as he had these thoughts and he looked at Draco a moment just taking in the fact here, was someone who he resembled. Someone who was a curious and as he was to know the answer to those questions.
“I don’t know but that’s a loaded question in itself isn’t it Max?”
Draco replied as he grabbed his sport coat and he for a moment just was silently in reflection.
“I can’t say I was a saint, there were times I hurt her but that was mostly name calling. I love her and she knows it. I don’t know a woman’s mind on such matters truly but I do know if she stills loves me and lets me love her back, I will do anything in my power to make her happy. “
Max heard his Fathers words and knew he was telling the truth as he could hear the sadness but also a spark of determination in the sound of his voice. A hope.
“She’s proven she doesn’t need me, however I need her to be truly happy the heart wants what it wants and I want Hermione. Love is love and I love her. There’s nothing she can do to change that, not even this. I forgive her Max and I’m not as angry as I think I should be either.”
Draco found as he said this it was not only truthful but also he was feeling a bit more determined to make it work. He had always questioned these things and had more now he knew of Max but he was surprisingly not angry with his witch. She was his as he was hers and he knew it. He reflected silently now as they made their way to the car and he got into the passenger side buckling up and took a calming breath. Max paused a moment as he looked at the car and ran a hand over her and got into the drivers side and buckled up.
Max turned the car over and she purred like a kitten and he slowly backed it out of the garage and let out a breath of relief a sigh that escaped him as he hadn't realized he had been holding his breath. They drove slow at first then Draco replied.
"Almost like being on a broom isn't it? I miss that alot as I never get the time to fly anymore. You play Quidditch you told me right? Are you any good?"
Draco asked trying to make small talk and being painfully obvious he was interested in Max. Max nodded and replied.
"I'm good not the best but I do alright. Slytherin has a good team.I'm the captain."
Max said this with pride as they got to the round about and people stared at the car.
Soon they arrived at the mall and Max parked the car and turned off the ignition. Draco looked around and all he saw was a large building and wondered where they were. What was this place?
"Let me guess you have no idea what a mall is do you Draco?"
Max asked and laughed and smiled a moment. He realized his old man had no idea and Draco shook his head and ended up chuckling as well.
"Nope I have no clue. ."
Draco replied as they got out of the car and made their way to the entrance.
