Chapter Nine: A new member of the party.
Hermione began to squirm as she tried to push Draco off of her. Draco broke the kiss and he replied in her ear.
“Don’t move and don’t do anything rash Granger. When I get up grab the knife in the pocket of my coat and I’ll try to distract it. Also while you’re getting the knife throwing me my pants would be a good idea.”
As Draco said this he looked at her and when she tried to struggle again he said in a low but forceful voice.
“Hermione you’re really making it difficult, stop moving I’m not about to ravish you alright? I’m going to get up on the count of three and when I do get close to the fire and hope that wolf over there doesn’t have a pack with him.”
Draco said this slowly pulling his weight off of her and then sat up very slowly. A loud growl was heard and he grabbed one of the burning sticks of drift wood and got up.
“123”
As he got up he waved the stick around a moment and tried to scare the wolf away. Hermione for a moment felt petrified as she watched him. Here was Draco Malfoy naked as the day he was born throwing a stick of fire burning drift wood and she just couldn’t help herself as she looked him over.
“Granger! Grangers get up and toss me my pants will you? I don’t want the beast to think I’m giving him a snack here.”
Hermione snapped back to reality and scrambled for Draco’s boxers and tossed them towards him as well as she got as close to the fire as she could holding his knife. Draco kept eye contact with the beast as he scrambled to put on his shorts and then he went and started to chase it.
The Wolf to Hermione’s horror came running towards her in that moment. She raised her hand to strike and keep it from biting her but then she stopped and got up dropping the knife and to Draco’s confusion and dismay she sat down and was petting the wolf.
“Granger what the hell do you think you’re doing? Get away from that thing!”
Draco retrieved the knife and came closer when he saw she was saying something to the wolf and she turned to look at Draco.
“It’s just a cub Draco. Please get my bag its hurt its paw and I can’t stand to see it hurting like this.”
Draco grumbled and was about to tell her to get her own damn bag when he saw the look on her face. Hermione was near tears now as she was pleading with him.
:: Dammit Granger why do you have to be so… It’s so irritating!:
Draco got the bag and put it down next to her. Hermione smiled and thanked him and he watched as she bandaged up and pulled a wicked looking piece of splinter from the pup’s paw.
The Wolf cub began to lick Hermione’s face and when Draco finally calmed down enough to sit down next to them, it looked at Draco growled then went and lay it’s head on Hermione’s lap.
“There all better. You should be more careful little one.”
Hermione was saying this as she was petting the wolf cub and she for a moment smiled quietly to herself. Draco noticed the pup had fallen asleep and for a moment he said nothing but looked into the fire.
Hermione was silent as well but then replied after a few minutes.
“Thank you Draco. Really he’s nothing but a big baby, a puppy. I’m glad I can at least do one thing right.”
“Well it looked bigger before and .. I’m not going to apologize for kissing you and.. and well I didn’t know he was a puppy. All I knew was he could have had a huge pack all surrounding us and we don’t have our wands to protect us. “
Draco said this then he took a breath and looked at the fire a moment.
“Besides, you’ve done a lot more than I have and are more prepared than I could ever be Hermione. Done nothing right? If it weren’t for you right now we’d be in the dark and have no fire or him..”
As Draco indicated the wolf cub it woke up and growled at him a moment.
“Maybe we can train him to help us find food in the forest or something I don’t know but right now I think we both need to get some sort of rest. I figure you’d want to keep him around and I’m too tired to argue the point so let’s try to sleep or you sleep first shift and I’ll watch.”
Draco kept looking now around them and put some more wood on the fire to keep it going.
Hermione was in shock as his words had been complimentary. Well perhaps a bit backhanded but it was a compliment and she looked at the pup a moment and decided something.
“I think we should call him shadow as he is mostly black and silver and I agree we might need his help here as we have no idea what’s in that forest. He’s been hurt not just his paw but he has scars so I figure he probably is a lone wolf. He’s old enough to be weaned from his mother at any rate.”
Hermione then to Draco's surprise kissed his cheek and replied.
"Thank you for saving my life or trying to.What you did was very brave Draco."
Hermione said this then she grabbed the pillows and put them down and a blanket and she laid her head down. She cradled the sleeping wolf pup, who was almost as long as she was in her arms and lay on her side.
Draco didn’t respond as he got up and looked around them. He soon heard her soft gasps and saw she was asleep. Draco was quiet as the night grew darker and colder. He saw she was shivering slightly and he went to wrap his coat around her sleeping form. He sat there half lay next to her watching her and then to his surprise fell asleep.
Hermione was warm; she snuggled into the warmness and relaxed into a deeper sleep. The Pup woke up and moved away a few feet from the people as Hermione and Draco both shifted in slumber into each other’s arms.
Draco in his sleep had wrapped his arms around Hermione and pulled her closer. Their bodies warmed each other and both soon were heavy in sleep.
The sound of the Wolf cub barking a moment and the appearance of a man walking towards the couple didn’t register with either of them.
“This is going to be very interesting indeed”
Said the man as he placed a bottle down near them with a piece of paper in it and then smiled at the wolf cub and he disappeared with a flash.
